šŸ”§ Escape - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

The rear turn signal bulb sits inside the rear tail lamp assembly. You’ll remove the tail lamp from the body, twist out the bulb socket, swap the bulb, then reinstall everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let the lamps cool first; bulbs can get hot.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø Support the tail lamp as you pull it out so it doesn’t drop and crack.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Make sure all exterior lights are switched OFF.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate and look at the inboard edge of the rear tail lamp (the side closest to the liftgate opening).
  • Use a flashlight to locate the two retaining screws/bolts.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp screws

  • Use an 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the two screws/bolts.
  • Torque: Not specified by Ford for these fasteners; reinstall snug only (do not overtighten).
  • Put the screws in a cup immediately.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly off the body

  • Grip the tail lamp with both hands.
  • Pull the lamp straight rearward (toward you). It is held by alignment pins/grommets.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool very gently at the edge to help start it moving.
  • Pull straight back—don’t twist.

Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • On the back of the tail lamp, identify the socket for the turn signal (follow the wiring from the vehicle connector if needed).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it out.
  • If the socket is tight, use nitrile gloves for extra grip.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (this helps keep moisture out).
  • Don’t touch the bulb glass.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Align the tail lamp’s pins with the body grommets, then press the lamp straight inward until it seats flush.
  • Reinstall the two screws/bolts using the 8mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • Torque: Not specified by Ford; tighten snug only.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test the rear turn signal and hazard lights.
  • If the turn signal ā€œfast flashes,ā€ remove the lamp and re-check that the bulb is fully seated and the correct bulb was installed.
  • Verify the tail lamp is flush and not loose.
