šŸ”§ CX-5 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your CX-5’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the tail light housings. The job is usually done from inside the cargo area by opening the small access covers, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let bulbs cool first—tail light bulbs can get hot.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø Support the liftgate fully open so it can’t drop while you work.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Inch-pound torque wrench (specialty)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/WY21W) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate and remove cargo as needed for space.
  • Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail light service cover

  • Open the liftgate and go to the side you’re replacing.
  • Use a flashlight to find the small access door/cover in the cargo-side trim behind the tail light.
  • Remove the cover using a plastic trim removal tool (a non-metal pry tool that helps prevent scratches).

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail light housing.
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand.
  • Pull the socket straight out.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in type).
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/WY21W) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry. Tip: Keep grease off the bulb glass.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Reinsert the socket into the housing, then rotate clockwise to lock it.
  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the turn signal and hazard lights.
  • If it doesn’t work, remove the socket again and make sure the bulb is fully pushed in.

Step 5 (If you can’t reach the socket): Remove the tail light assembly

  • Inside the cargo area, remove any extra trim pieces blocking the tail light fasteners using a plastic trim removal tool and Phillips screwdriver.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail light mounting nuts.
  • Carefully pull the tail light straight back to release the locating pins.
  • Replace the bulb as in Steps 2–4.
  • Reinstall the tail light nuts and Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs) using an inch-pound torque wrench (specialty).

āœ… After Repair

  • Verify left and right turn signals flash normally (not fast).
  • Check hazards and brake lights to confirm nothing else was disturbed.
  • Make sure the access cover(s) are fully clipped back in to prevent rattles.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $8-$25 (parts only)

You Save: $35-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.7 hours.
