🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulb - Replacement
The rear turn signal bulb on your CX-5 is usually replaced from inside the cargo area by removing the tail lamp access cover and twisting out the bulb socket. This is a simple job if you work gently and keep the lens and clips from getting damaged.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the lights off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Let the bulb cool before touching it. Halogen bulbs get very hot.
- Do not touch a new halogen bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil shortens bulb life.
- Work carefully around the tail lamp lens and plastic clips. They can crack easily.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

- Make sure the headlight and turn signal switch is off.
- If you are replacing both sides, do one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the rear access area
- Open the liftgate and move any cargo out of the way.
- Use your hand or a trim panel tool to gently remove the small side access cover in the cargo area near the tail lamp.
- Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket
- Reach behind the tail lamp and find the rear turn signal bulb socket.
- Use your hand to twist the socket counterclockwise, then pull it straight out.
- If it is tight, use a small flathead screwdriver carefully to help release it.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Do not force it. The bulb should fit cleanly.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket
- Line the socket tabs up with the housing opening.
- Use your hand to twist the socket clockwise until it locks.
- Make sure it sits snug and does not wobble.
Step 5: Test the new bulb
- Turn the ignition on.
- Turn on the left and right turn signals one at a time.
- Confirm the new bulb flashes normally and matches the other side.
✅ After Repair
- Check the turn signal from outside the vehicle to confirm proper operation.
- Make sure the tail lamp area is sealed and the access cover is back in place.
- If the signal still flashes fast, the bulb may not be fully seated or the wrong type may be installed.
