🔧 Escape - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Escape, the rear turn signal bulb sits inside the outer tail lamp assembly on the body (not the liftgate). Replacement usually means removing the tail lamp, swapping the bulb, then reinstalling everything snug and aligned.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and let bulbs cool before touching them.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp as you pull it out so you don’t crack the lens.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves to keep skin oils off the new bulb glass (oils can shorten bulb life).
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Needle-nose pliers
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses

Assumption: Bulb type can vary by tail lamp; match the new bulb to the number printed on your old bulb.
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
- Lay a towel on the bumper area to protect paint if the lamp slips.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate and locate the two tail lamp retaining screws on the inboard edge of the tail lamp.
- Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension to remove both screws.
Step 2: Pull the tail lamp assembly off the body
- Grip the tail lamp and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins (they are press-fit).
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it pop free. Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Find the socket for the turn signal on the back of the tail lamp (a “socket” is the twist-lock holder the bulb sits in).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
- If it’s tight, use needle-nose pliers carefully on the socket tabs—do not crush the plastic.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (most are a simple push-in style).
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Line up the tail lamp alignment pins with the body holes, then press the lamp straight in until it sits flush.
- Install the two screws using the 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet, then Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) (snug only—do not overtighten).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other rear turn signal. Pairs keep brightness even.
✅ After Repair
- Test the turn signals, hazards, and brake lights.
- Confirm the bulb flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
- Make sure both tail lamps sit flush and don’t wiggle.
