🔧 Explorer - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Explorer’s rear turn signal bulbs are housed inside the tail lamp assemblies. The job is mainly removing the tail lamp, swapping the bulb, and reinstalling everything so the lamp seals correctly and stays aligned.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn off all lights and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool—hot bulbs can burn your fingers.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t scratch paint or drop.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4" drive)
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight

- Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
Assumption: Your Explorer uses a replaceable rear turn-signal bulb in the tail lamp (not an LED-only module).
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
- Lay a clean towel near the work area to set the lamp on.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access and remove the tail lamp screws
- Open the liftgate.
- Locate the two fasteners on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side closest to the liftgate opening).
- Remove them using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 8mm socket (different fastener heads are common).
Step 2: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight back
- Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you).
- If it’s stuck, gently work the edges using a plastic trim removal tool. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps pop clips without damaging paint.)
- Tip: Don’t pull outward sideways—pins can break.
Step 3: Remove the turn-signal bulb socket
- With the lamp loose, support it and look behind it for the bulb sockets.
- Identify the turn-signal socket (it will twist-lock into the housing).
- Rotate the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if tight).
- Put on nitrile gloves, then push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If the bulb is a wedge-base style, it simply presses in—no twisting.
Step 5: Reinstall socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and rotate clockwise to lock.
- Line up the tail lamp’s locating pins with the body grommets, then press the lamp straight in until it sits flush.
- Reinstall the two fasteners using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 8mm socket.
- Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs)
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other rear turn signal.
- Tip: Replacing both keeps brightness and color even.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test left/right turn signals and hazard lights.
- Verify the tail lamp sits evenly and the liftgate closes without rubbing.
- If you get a fast-blink on the dash, recheck that the bulb is fully seated and correct type.
