On your Focus, the rear turn signal bulbs are inside the tail lamp assemblies. Youāll remove the tail lamp, twist out the bulb socket, swap the bulb, then reinstall everything so the lamp seals and works correctly.

š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
- Have a flashlight ready so you can see the bulb socket positions.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which side bulb youāre replacing
- Turn the hazard lights ON briefly to identify the left or right fast-blinking lamp, then turn hazards OFF.
- Fast blinking usually means a bad bulb.
Step 2: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the trunk.
- On the side youāre working on, pull back the trunk liner near the tail lamp.
- Use a plastic trim tool set to pop any liner retainers loose.
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts
- Use an 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the tail lamp nuts.
- Set the nuts aside where they wonāt fall into the trunk trim.
Step 4: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Hold the tail lamp with one hand from outside the car.
- Gently pull the lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins/clips.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool set to gently help separate it at the edgeādo not pry hard.
- Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.
Step 5: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- With the tail lamp loose, locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it out by hand.
- If itās tight, use a pick tool gently on the socket tab to start it moving.
- āSocketā is the plastic holder the bulb locks into.
Step 6: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Push the new bulb fully into the socket until it seats.
Step 7: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Turn the ignition ON and test the turn signal and hazards.
- If it doesnāt work, turn ignition OFF and remove/reseat the bulb and socket.
Step 8: Reinstall the tail lamp and tighten fasteners
- Align the tail lamp locating pins and press the lamp straight in until it seats evenly.
- Install the nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use an 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet to snug them.
- Finish with a torque wrench (inch-pound): Torque to 27 in-lb (3 Nm).
- Reposition the trunk liner and snap retainers back in using the plastic trim tool set.
ā After Repair
- Verify left and right turn signals, hazards, tail lamps, and brake lamps all work.
- Check the tail lamp sits flush with the body and the gasket isnāt pinched.
- If you see moisture later, remove and re-seat the lamp to ensure the seal is even.
