🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

The rear turn signal bulbs on your RAV4 are located in the tail lamp housings. Replacing them is a straightforward job that usually takes only a few minutes per side, and it’s smart to replace both sides at the same time so the brightness matches.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Let the tail lamps cool down before touching them if they were recently on.
  • Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Use care around the tail lamp lens so you do not crack the plastic.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - 7440A amber - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear liftgate.
  • Keep the headlights and turn signals switched off.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the rear access area

  • Open the liftgate and locate the rear trim access area behind the tail lamp on the side you are replacing.
  • Keep the work area clear.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining fasteners

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts/bolts inside the cargo area.
  • Set the fasteners aside where you will not lose them.

Step 3: Release the tail lamp assembly

  • Gently pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
  • If it sticks, use a trim panel tool to help start the release without scratching the paint.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Twist the rear turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise and remove it from the lamp housing.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Install the new 7440A amber bulb into the socket.
  • Handle the bulb by the base, not the glass.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing and twist clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Align the tail lamp pins and press the lamp back into position.
  • Reinstall the retaining fasteners with the 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension.
  • Torque to 6.0 Nm (53 in-lbs).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same steps for the opposite rear turn signal bulb.
  • Replace both sides together.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition on and test both rear turn signals.
  • Check that the hazard lights flash normally.
  • Confirm the bulb sits fully in the socket and the tail lamp is flush with the body.
