🔧 RAV4 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and swap in a new bulb. This fixes a fast-blinking turn signal, a bulb-out warning, or a rear signal that’s dim or dead.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes if they were just on.
- ⚠️ Don’t pull the tail lamp sideways—pull it straight back to avoid breaking the locating pins.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the rear liftgate for access.
- Tip: A plastic trim tool prevents scratches. A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool used to pop clips without damaging paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate.
- Locate the two Phillips screws on the inboard edge of the rear tail lamp (visible with the liftgate open).
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove both screws.
Step 2: Remove the rear tail lamp assembly
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the tail lamp housing and pull it straight rearward (toward the back of the vehicle) to release the alignment pins.
- If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving—work slowly around the edge.
Step 3: Remove the rear turn-signal bulb socket
- Find the turn-signal socket on the back of the tail lamp assembly (the socket that lines up with the amber turn-signal section).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a wedge-type bulb).
- Install the new 7440A amber bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Tip: Don’t touch the glass if possible.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Line up the tail lamp’s locating pins with the body and push the assembly straight in until fully seated.
- Reinstall the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Replace the bulb on the other rear lamp the same way (recommended so both sides match in brightness and color).
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test: left signal, right signal, and hazards.
- Confirm the bulb-out / fast-blink is gone.
- Make sure the tail lamp sits flush and there are no gaps (helps prevent water leaks).
