🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement - Bulb Replacement

Your Corolla’s rear turn signal bulbs are accessed from inside the trunk by removing the tail lamp access covers. This is a simple repair, but the bulb type and socket need to be handled carefully so you do not crack the lens or damage the bulb holder.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the rear bulbs cool down before touching them. They can get hot.
  • Do not touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers. Oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
  • Work carefully around the tail lamp housing. The plastic tabs can break if forced.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb, amber - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and make sure you have enough light to see the lamp access area.
  • If one bulb failed, it is smart to replace both rear turn signal bulbs together.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and access the tail lamp area

  • Open the trunk and go to the side with the failed turn signal.
  • Use your hand or a trim panel tool to remove the small trunk-side access cover behind the tail lamp.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the bulb holder

  • Reach into the opening and locate the rear turn signal bulb socket.
  • Use your hand to twist the socket counterclockwise and pull it out of the tail lamp housing.
  • If it is stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver very gently to help release it.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new amber rear turn signal bulb by pushing it straight into the socket.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully seated.
  • Do not twist the bulb into place.

Step 4: Reinstall the bulb holder

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
  • Twist it clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Make sure it feels secure and fully seated.

Step 5: Test the turn signal

  • Turn the ignition key to ON.
  • Activate the rear turn signal on that side.
  • Confirm the bulb flashes normally and at the correct brightness.

Step 6: Reinstall the access cover

  • Put the trunk access cover back in place.
  • Press it in until it sits flush.
  • Repeat the same steps on the other side if you are replacing both bulbs.

âś… After Repair

  • Check the rear turn signals, hazard lights, and brake lights to make sure everything works normally.
  • Walk behind the vehicle and confirm both sides flash at the same speed.
  • If the bulb does not light, remove the socket again and check the bulb seating.
