šŸ”§ Corolla - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Corolla’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the outer tail lamp assembly (on the quarter panel). The job is mainly trim removal, loosening a couple of nuts, and swapping the bulb from the back of the lamp.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life. Use gloves.
  • āš ļø Support the tail lamp as you pull it free so you don’t scratch paint or crack the lens.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A) - Qty: 1 (replace in pairs recommended)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
  • Tip: Replace both sides for even brightness.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and remove the access cover

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop out the trunk-side trim clips or access cover behind the tail lamp (left or right side, depending on which bulb you’re replacing).
  • Use a small flashlight to locate the back of the tail lamp and the bulb sockets.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the tail lamp nuts (typically two).
  • Set the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trunk trim.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly outward

  • Hold the lamp with one hand and pull it straight outward from the body. It’s held by alignment pins, so it may take a firm, steady pull.
  • Do not pry against painted surfaces with metal tools.

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal socket on the back of the tail lamp (it will be one of the twist-lock sockets).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
  • Tip: If tight, wiggle while twisting.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Keep gloves on so you don’t touch the bulb glass.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Line up the lamp’s alignment pins with the body grommets, then press the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the nuts using the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 7: Reinstall the trunk trim/access cover

  • Reinstall the access cover and any trim clips you removed using the plastic trim removal tool (press clips in by hand until they snap).

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the turn signal and hazards on that side.
  • Confirm the blink rate is normal (a fast blink usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
  • Check that the tail lamp is fully seated and sits flush with the body.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $5-$20 (parts only)

You Save: $40-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
