🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replacing the rear turn signal bulbs on your Corolla is a simple trunk-access job. You remove the rear lamp access cover, twist out the bulb socket, and swap the bulb for a matching replacement. If your car has an LED rear lamp assembly instead of a replaceable bulb, the whole lamp housing must be serviced instead.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the rear lamp cool down if the lights were recently on.
  • Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb with bare fingers.
  • If a bulb is hard to remove, do not force the socket; the plastic tabs can break.
  • If your Corolla has an LED rear lamp assembly, the bulb may not be serviceable separately.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and make sure you have room to work.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs so both sides stay bright and match.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and access the lamp area

  • Open the trunk and locate the rear lamp access area behind the tail light housing.
  • Use a trim panel tool to remove any trunk liner clips or push retainers blocking access.
  • Pull the liner back enough to reach the bulb socket.

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
  • Do not twist hard.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb into the socket until it seats fully.
  • Make sure the bulb matches the original bulb style and base.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket

  • Align the socket with the tail lamp opening.
  • Insert it straight in and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Make sure it is snug but not over-tightened.

Step 5: Test the new bulb

  • Turn the ignition on.
  • Activate the left and right turn signals one at a time.
  • Check that the new bulb flashes normally and matches the other side.

Step 6: Reinstall the trunk trim

  • Put the trunk liner back into place.
  • Reinstall any clips or retainers you removed.
  • Close the trunk and do one final outside light check.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify both rear turn signals flash at the same rate.
  • Check the hazard lights too.
  • If the bulb still does not work, inspect the socket for corrosion or a blown fuse.
