🔧 3500 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your 3500, the rear turn signal bulb is serviced by removing the taillamp assembly from the bedside, then swapping the bulb in the correct socket. This is a quick job, but the taillamp is held in with alignment pins that need a straight pull to avoid breaking clips.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first—halogen/incandescent bulbs can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves; skin oils can shorten bulb life if you touch the glass.
  • ⚠️ Pull the taillamp straight rearward—don’t pry hard on the painted bedside.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn/stop bulb (3157) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs.
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the taillamp screws.
  • If you recently used the lights, wait 5–10 minutes for the bulb to cool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which side and bulb you’re replacing

  • Turn on the hazards and walk around to find the failed rear turn signal.
  • Turn hazards off and remove the key before disassembly.

Step 2: Remove the taillamp screws

  • Open the tailgate.
  • On the inboard edge of the taillamp, remove the two fasteners using a Torx T25 screwdriver (some trucks use 8mm socket instead).
  • Set the screws aside where they won’t fall into the bumper gap.

Step 3: Pull the taillamp assembly out

  • Grip the taillamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help start it—don’t lever against painted metal.
  • Straight pull prevents breaking the locator pins.

Step 4: Remove the turn-signal bulb socket

  • Locate the socket for the turn/stop bulb on the back of the taillamp (usually the larger dual-filament bulb socket).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • Use a small flashlight to confirm you’re on the correct socket before removing the bulb.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Push the new rear turn/stop bulb (3157) straight in until fully seated.
  • If desired, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and taillamp

  • Insert the socket back into the taillamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Align the taillamp pins with their holes and press the taillamp straight in until fully seated.
  • Reinstall the two taillamp screws using a Torx T25 screwdriver or 8mm socket.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • Replace the bulb on the other taillamp as well so both sides match in brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition on and test: left turn, right turn, hazards, brake lights, and reverse lights.
  • If the turn signal “hyper-flashes” (fast blink), recheck the bulb seating and the correct bulb type.
  • If your 3500 has factory LED taillamps and there is no removable bulb socket, the fix is typically taillamp assembly replacement (no serviceable bulb).
