🔧 F-250 Super Duty - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your A4’s rear turn signals are built into the tail lamp assemblies. You’ll remove the tail lamp, twist out the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything so the signal (and brake light, if shared) works correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

Assumption: Your rear turn signal uses a common dual-filament bulb (often 3157) in the tail lamp. Always match the new bulb to the number printed on the old bulb.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the tail lamp as you pull it out so you don’t scratch paint.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (match your old bulb, commonly 3157) - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
  • Rear turn signal bulb (optional, replace in pairs) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear tail lamp

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension to remove the two tail lamp screws on the inside edge of the lamp (near the tailgate opening).
  • Grab the tail lamp housing with both hands and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins (they’re snug).
  • If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving. Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.

Step 2: Find the turn-signal socket

  • Behind the tail lamp, locate the bulb sockets (they twist-lock into the housing).
  • Identify the turn-signal/brake socket by tracing the wiring to the correct position in the lamp.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the tail lamp.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (no tools needed).
  • Check the number printed on the bulb base (example: “3157”) and match your replacement bulb to it.
  • Use a clean shop towel to handle the new bulb if it’s glass.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the socket seal (dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps prevent corrosion and moisture).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Line up the tail lamp alignment pins and push the housing straight forward into place.
  • Reinstall the two screws using the 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension until snug. Don’t overtighten; plastic can crack.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • If one bulb burned out, the other side is often close behind—repeat the same steps for the other tail lamp.

âś… After Repair

  • Test the turn signals (left/right) and hazards.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm the same bulb area lights correctly (many setups share brake/turn).
  • If it doesn’t work, remove the bulb and re-seat it, then re-check the socket lock.
  • Make sure the tail lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)
