🔧 Grand Cherokee - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Grand Cherokee, the rear turn signal may be a replaceable amber bulb inside the tail lamp, or it may be an LED tail lamp where the “bulb” isn’t serviceable separately. The steps below walk you through checking which style you have, then replacing the bulb (or the tail lamp assembly if it’s LED).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and let the lamp cool before touching it.
- ⚠️ Set the parking brake and work on level ground.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves to avoid cutting your hands on sharp edges.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Torque wrench (inch-pound)
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber, match your existing bulb type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Rear tail lamp assembly - Only if your turn signal is LED/non-serviceable - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the inner edge of the tail lamp.
- Quick check: look behind the tail lamp for a round twist-lock socket (serviceable bulb). If there is no socket and the turn signal is LED, you’ll replace the tail lamp assembly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which rear signal setup you have
- Use a flashlight and look at the back/inner edge of the tail lamp with the liftgate open.
- If you see a round bulb socket that twists out, follow Steps 2-6 (bulb replacement).
- If you do not see any removable bulb socket and the turn signal is an LED strip, follow Steps 2-4 then skip to Step 7 (lamp assembly replacement).
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pop any small access cover (if equipped) near the inner edge of the tail lamp.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts/bolts.
- Set the hardware aside where it won’t get lost.
Step 3: Pull the tail lamp housing out
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Grip the tail lamp and pull it straight rearward (toward you). It’s usually held by alignment pins that “pop” free.
- Pull straight back, don’t pry on paint.
Step 4: Disconnect wiring (if needed for room)
- If the wiring is tight, press the connector lock tab and disconnect the harness by hand.
Step 5: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket (serviceable-bulb setup)
- Find the turn signal socket on the back of the tail lamp.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
Step 6: Replace the bulb (serviceable-bulb setup)
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) fully into the socket.
- Reinstall the socket and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Don’t touch bulb glass with bare fingers.
Step 7: If LED/non-serviceable, replace the tail lamp assembly
- Transfer any harness clips from the old lamp to the new lamp by hand.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Position the new lamp so the alignment pins line up, then press it straight in until seated.
Step 8: Reinstall the tail lamp fasteners
- Install the nuts/bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench (inch-pound) to tighten: Torque to 44 in-lbs (5 Nm).
- Reinstall any access cover using the plastic trim removal tool as needed to seat it.
Step 9: Repeat on the other side (recommended)
- Replace the other rear turn signal bulb as well so brightness and color match.
✅ After Repair
- Test the left and right turn signals, hazards, and brake lights.
- Verify the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.
- If you still get a fast-blink, recheck the bulb seating and socket lock.
