🔧 Grand Cherokee - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulbs inside the liftgate-mounted tail lamp assemblies on your Grand Cherokee. A failed rear turn signal bulb can cause fast blinking, warning messages, or no signal from that side.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working on the lamps.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching them; bulbs can get hot during use.
- ⚠️ Do not pull on wiring. Pull on the bulb socket or connector body only.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves or use a clean cloth so skin oil does not contaminate the new bulb.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb replacement.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground.
- 🔒 Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- 💡 Turn the exterior lights and hazard lights off.
- 🚪 Open the liftgate fully so you can access the tail lamp fasteners.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- 🛠️ A trim clip removal tool is a flat plastic pry tool used to lift panels without scratching paint or breaking clips.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate
- Use your hand to open the liftgate completely.
- Stand on the side where the rear turn signal bulb needs replacement.
- Use safety glasses before working near trim panels and lamp edges.
Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Access Fasteners
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the visible screws along the inner edge of the tail lamp assembly.
- Place the screws on a shop towel so they do not roll away.
- If there are small plastic access covers, use a trim clip removal tool to gently lift them first.
- Tip: Pry slowly to avoid cracked trim.
Step 3: Pull the Tail Lamp Assembly Rearward
- Use both hands to grip the tail lamp assembly.
- Pull the assembly straight rearward, away from the body.
- Do not twist the lamp; alignment pins hold it in place and can break if angled too far.
- If it feels stuck, use the trim clip removal tool carefully at the outer edge to help release the retaining pin.
Step 4: Locate the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Look at the back of the tail lamp assembly.
- The rear turn signal bulb socket is the socket for the amber turn signal bulb.
- Use a shop towel to steady the lamp so it does not scratch the paint.
Step 5: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Use your gloved hand to turn the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 6: Replace the Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If the bulb does not slide in easily, turn it 180 degrees and try again.
- Tip: Do not force the bulb.
Step 7: Test the New Bulb Before Reassembly
- Keep the bulb socket safely away from moving parts and sharp edges.
- Turn the ignition to Run without starting the engine.
- Move the turn signal stalk to the side you repaired.
- Confirm the new rear turn signal bulb flashes normally.
- Turn the ignition and turn signal off before continuing.
Step 8: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Use your gloved hand to insert the bulb socket into the tail lamp housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
- Make sure it sits flat so water cannot enter the lamp.
Step 9: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly
- Line up the tail lamp guide pins with the body openings.
- Push the lamp straight forward until it seats evenly against the body.
- Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screws.
- Tighten the screws snug only. No published torque is normally required for these small lamp screws.
- Do not overtighten; plastic lamp housings can crack.
Step 10: Repeat on the Other Side if Replacing in Pairs
- Use the same Phillips #2 screwdriver, trim clip removal tool, gloves, and shop towel on the opposite side.
- Replacing both rear turn signal bulbs together helps keep brightness even.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn on the left and right turn signals and confirm both rear signals flash normally.
- ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both rear turn signal bulbs flash together.
- ✅ Check that the tail lamp assembly sits flush with the body.
- ✅ Watch for fast blinking. Fast blinking usually means a bulb is still out or not seated correctly.
- ✅ No scan tool reset is required for this repair.
