🔧 Journey - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Journey’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail lamp assembly. Replacing it usually means removing the tail lamp, swapping the bulb, then reinstalling everything so the lamp seals correctly and doesn’t take in water.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and make sure all exterior lights are OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if they were just on (hot glass can burn you).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Work gently—tail lamp mounting pins can crack if forced.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp mounting screws.
- Tip: Keep a small tray for screws.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate and look at the inner edge of the tail lamp (the edge closest to the liftgate opening).
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the tail lamp retaining screws.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Hold the lamp with one hand and pull it straight rearward (toward you).
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it release. (A trim tool is a non-marring plastic pry tool that helps pop clips loose without scratching paint.)
- Tip: Pull straight back—don’t twist.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (it will twist-lock into the housing).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you have it, apply a very thin film of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
- Tip: Use gloves to avoid touching glass.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
- Line up the tail lamp’s locating pins with the body grommets, then push the lamp straight in until fully seated.
- Reinstall the retaining screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Use a 1/4" drive torque wrench (inch-pound) and Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal on the side you repaired.
- Confirm the lamp is seated evenly (no gaps) to help prevent water leaks.
- If the bulb doesn’t work, remove it and re-seat it fully in the socket.
