🔧 Compass - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, swap the turn-signal bulb in its socket, then reinstall everything and test it. This is a simple job, but the lamp housing has alignment pins that can crack if you pry the wrong way.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Quick questions (so you buy the right bulb):
- 🧠When you remove the old bulb, what bulb number is printed on it (example: 7440, 3157)?
- 🧠Is your rear turn signal located in the main tail light on the body, or in the bumper?
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool first—incandescent bulbs get very hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch a new glass bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp as you pull it out so it doesn’t scratch the paint.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Ratchet
- 8mm socket
- Trim clip tool
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean microfiber towel
🔩 Required Parts

- Rear turn signal bulb (verify bulb number on old bulb) - Qty: 1
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
- Lay a clean microfiber towel on the bumper edge below the lamp to protect paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate.
- At the inboard edge of the rear tail lamp (the side closest to the liftgate opening), locate the mounting screws.
- Use a flashlight to clearly see the fasteners before removing them.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp screws
- Use an 8mm socket with a ratchet to remove the tail lamp mounting screws.
- Put the screws somewhere safe so they don’t drop into the body.
- Torque spec: Not consistently labeled at the fastener in service references; reinstall snug only (do not overtighten into plastic).
Step 3: Pull the tail lamp straight rearward
- Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight back (toward the rear of the vehicle).
- If it feels stuck, gently work it side-to-side by hand—avoid prying against the paint.
- If you must assist, use a trim clip tool to apply light pressure at the edge. A trim clip tool is a flat, forked plastic/metal tool that helps separate panels without damaging them.
- Tip: Straight back prevents breaking alignment pins.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Identify the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (it will be one of the twist-lock sockets).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket (most are a straight “push-in” style).
- Check the bulb number printed on the base and match it to the new bulb.
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- If the bulb is glass, wear nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.
- Optional: Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Test the turn signal before reassembly
- Reinsert the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock it by hand.
- Turn ignition ON and switch on the hazard lights.
- Verify the repaired side flashes normally (not fast).
- If it doesn’t light: remove the bulb and reinstall it firmly; also inspect the socket for corrosion.
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp
- Align the lamp’s locating pins with the body holes.
- Press the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the screws using the 8mm socket and ratchet.
- Torque spec: Tighten snug only; stop when the lamp is secure and flush.
âś… After Repair
- Test left and right turn signals and hazards.
- Confirm the lamp is flush to the body and not loose.
- If you get rapid flashing, the bulb may be incorrect type or not seated.
