🔧 Equinox - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll access the rear lamp bulb socket from inside the cargo area, swap the turn-signal bulb, then test the blinkers. This is a quick job, but take care not to break the plastic access cover or twist the wrong socket.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.75 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and don’t touch the bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nylon trim removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for better light and access.
  • Have your new bulbs ready and keep them clean (use nitrile gloves).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the rear cargo access panel

  • Go to the rear cargo area on the side you’re replacing.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the small access door/cover behind the side trim (near the tail lamp area).
  • Pry the cover open carefully using a nylon trim removal tool. If needed, use a small flathead screwdriver gently. Pry slowly to avoid snapping tabs.

Step 2: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Look for the bulb socket that corresponds to the turn signal (not the brake or reverse light).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (no tool needed).
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If your old bulb is marked, match the new one to the same type and color (rear turn signals use an amber bulb).

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and close everything up

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Twist the socket clockwise by hand until it locks in place (snug, do not force).
  • Reinstall the access cover by pressing it in until the tabs click.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal on that side.
  • Test hazards and both turn signals to confirm normal blink speed.
  • If it blinks fast (hyper-flash), recheck the bulb seating and that the bulb type matches the original.
