🔧 Tacoma - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the rear tail lamp assemblies. The job is mainly removing the tail lamp, twisting out the bulb socket, and swapping the bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the key OFF.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching them (they get hot).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park behind the truck where you have space to work at the rear corners.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key.
- Lay a towel near the tail lamp area to protect the paint if you bump the lamp.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the rear tail lamp screws
- Open the tailgate.
- At the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side facing the tailgate opening), remove the two retaining screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- If your lamp uses bolts instead of screws, remove them using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
Step 2: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight back
- Hold the tail lamp housing with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck, use a trim panel tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently help it release from the alignment pins (plastic locating posts).
- Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.
Step 3: Locate the turn signal bulb socket
- Look at the back of the tail lamp and find the socket for the turn signal (usually the amber/turn position).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it out by hand.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Add a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).
- Match the old bulb style exactly.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Line up the tail lamp alignment pins with the body and push the lamp straight in until it sits flush.
- Reinstall the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (or bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet).
- If using a torque wrench, tighten the lamp fasteners to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals, hazards, and brake lights.
- If the turn signal blinks very fast, the bulb may be wrong type, not seated, or another bulb on that side is out.
- Confirm the tail lamp is fully seated and even with the body (no gaps).
