🔧 Camry - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the rear turn signal bulb by accessing the tail lamp sockets from inside the trunk, removing the turn-signal socket, and swapping the bulb. This restores proper signaling and helps you stay legal and visible at night and in bad weather.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool 5 minutes—hot bulbs can burn you.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you use a metal tool near wiring, work gently to avoid damaging the harness.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Trim clip removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- Small flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1
Assumption: your Camry uses an amber 7440/7440A-style rear turn bulb.
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and open the trunk.
- Make sure the light switch is OFF and the key is out of the car.
- Set your flashlight in the trunk so you can see the lamp sockets clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp area inside the trunk
- Use a small flashlight to locate the back side of the tail lamp assembly (left or right side of trunk).
- Remove the trunk trim cover/panel behind the tail lamp using a trim clip removal tool.
- If your trim uses screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
Step 2: Locate the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Use the small flashlight to identify the bulb sockets on the tail lamp.
- The turn signal socket is typically the one that uses an amber bulb (not the red brake/tail bulb).
- Tip: Compare left/right if unsure.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, gently wiggle while pulling—don’t yank the wiring.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (no twisting on most 7440-style bulbs).
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Avoid touching the bulb glass; keep your nitrile gloves on.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and trim
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp, aligning the tabs.
- Rotate the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Reinstall the trunk trim panel using the trim clip removal tool (to press clips back in) and Phillips screwdriver #2 if screws were removed.
Step 6: Test the turn signal
- Turn the ignition to ON and activate the turn signal for the side you repaired.
- Walk behind the car and confirm normal flashing speed and brightness.
- If it doesn’t light: turn everything off, re-check bulb seating and that the socket is fully locked in place.
âś… After Repair
- Verify both left and right rear turn signals flash at a normal rate.
- Confirm the hazard lights work properly.
- If the signal still “hyper-flashes,” a bulb may be the wrong type or not seated fully.
