🔧 Camry - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Camry’s rear turn signal bulb sits in the tail lamp assembly and is accessed from inside the trunk. The job is mostly trim access, twisting out the bulb socket, and installing a new bulb without damaging it.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let the lights cool down before touching bulbs.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Do not force trim panels—use a plastic trim tool to avoid breaking clips.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (7440 / 7440A amber) - Qty: 1
Assumption: Most Camry rear turn signals use a 7440-style bulb; HowToo will match by fitment.
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and open the trunk.
- Turn the light switch OFF and keep the key fob away from the car.
- Set your flashlight in the trunk so you can see behind the tail lamp.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp area from the trunk
- Use a flashlight to locate the rear of the tail lamp assembly (behind the trunk lining, near the corner).
- If your trunk liner has a small access door/cover, open it by hand.
- If the liner blocks access, carefully pop the clips using a plastic trim removal tool (a plastic pry tool that lifts panel clips without scratching).
Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal socket on the tail lamp (it’s one of the twist-lock sockets).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out by hand.
- Tip: Twist the socket, not the wires.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (it’s a wedge-style bulb).
- Push the new 7440 / 7440A bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and verify it’s sealed
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp opening.
- Rotate clockwise by hand until it locks snugly.
- Make sure the socket’s rubber seal sits flat so water can’t get in.
Step 5: If access was too tight, remove the tail lamp (only if needed)
- If you could not reach the socket, remove the tail lamp fasteners from inside the trunk using a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Remove any trim caps/screws with a Phillips screwdriver #2 as needed.
- Pull the tail lamp straight backward to release the locating pins (do not pry against the paint).
- Replace the bulb as in Steps 2–4.
- Reinstall tail lamp nuts: Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)
Step 6: Reinstall trunk trim
- Reposition the trunk liner.
- Press clips back in by hand, or use the plastic trim removal tool to align them first.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the car to READY and test the rear turn signal and hazard lights.
- Walk behind the car and confirm the repaired side flashes at the same speed as the other side.
- Check that the socket is fully locked and there’s no gap (helps prevent moisture).
