🔧 Camry - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Camry’s rear turn signal bulbs are inside the tail lamp assemblies and are accessed from the trunk. You’ll remove a small section of trunk liner, twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, then test the signal before reinstalling everything.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key/fob from the car area.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses—trunk clips and trim can snap loose.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp area in the trunk
- Use a flashlight to locate the trunk liner behind the tail lamp (left or right side).
- Remove any plastic fasteners using a trim clip removal tool.
- If a screw is present, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Peel the liner back enough to see the back of the tail lamp and bulb sockets.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the tail lamp nuts.
- Place the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t get lost in the trunk trim.
Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly outward
- Hold the lamp with one hand from the outside and gently pull it straight back.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle slightly—don’t pry hard on the painted body.
- Tip: Pull straight back to avoid breaking alignment pins.
Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal socket on the back of the tail lamp (usually the amber/turn position).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 6: Reinstall socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the tail lamp pins with the body holes and press the lamp straight in.
- Install the nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
Step 7: Reinstall trunk liner
- Reposition the liner.
- Reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool (or replace with new clips if any are damaged).
- Reinstall any screw using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the car ON and test the left and right turn signals and hazards.
- Verify the turn signal flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working).
- Check that the tail lamp sits flush and doesn’t wobble.
