🔧 Camry - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the rear turn signal bulbs in your Camry’s tail lights by accessing them from inside the trunk and twisting the bulb socket out. This restores proper signaling so other drivers can see your turns and lane changes.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Make sure the headlight switch and hazard lights are all turned off.
  • ⚠️ Work on a flat surface so the car is stable while you are in the trunk.
  • ⚠️ Let the tail light area cool if the lights were just on; bulbs can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of new bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🛠️ Trim clip removal tool (specialty)
  • 🛠️ Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 🛠️ Flathead screwdriver (6 mm tip)
  • 🛠️ Work light or flashlight
  • 🛠️ Mechanic gloves
  • 🛠️ Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
  • 🔩 Trunk trim clips - Qty: 4-6 (optional, in case any break)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Camry on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🚗 Open the trunk fully and clear out items on the left and right sides.
  • 🚗 Turn off the ignition and remove the key from the ignition switch.
  • 🚗 Turn off all exterior lights and the hazard switch.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the inside of the tail light

  • 🛠️ Open the trunk and look at the side walls, just behind each tail light assembly.
  • 🛠️ You’ll see a fabric or plastic trunk liner covering the area behind the tail lights.
  • 🛠️ Use the trim clip removal tool or flathead screwdriver (6 mm tip) to gently pry out the plastic clips or fasteners holding the trunk liner in place near the tail light.
  • 🛠️ Carefully pull the trunk liner back enough to see the backside of the tail light assembly. Only pull back as much as needed

Step 2: Locate the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • 🛠️ Behind the tail light you will see multiple bulb sockets (round plastic pieces that twist into the housing).
  • 🛠️ On your Camry, the rear turn signal is usually the middle or lower socket with an amber bulb labeled in the lens as “TURN.”
  • 🛠️ If unsure, turn the hazard lights on briefly and look from outside to see which part of the lamp flashes, then match that position to the socket inside. Turn the hazards back off before continuing.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • 🛠️ Grip the turn signal bulb socket firmly with one hand.
  • 🛠️ Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn (left) to unlock it.
  • 🛠️ Pull the socket straight out of the tail light housing. No torque spec here; just firm hand pressure.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • 🛠️ Hold the socket so you can see the bulb clearly.
  • 🛠️ The 7440 bulb is a wedge-type bulb; it pulls straight out.
  • 🛠️ With gloves on, pull the bulb straight out of the socket using your fingers. Wiggle gently if it is stuck. Do not twist this style bulb

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • 🛠️ Take a new 7440 amber bulb. Avoid touching the glass with bare fingers; use gloves or hold the metal base.
  • 🛠️ Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated and snug.
  • 🛠️ Give the bulb a light tug to confirm it is secure and will not fall out.

Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket into the tail light

  • 🛠️ Align the tabs on the bulb socket with the matching slots in the tail light housing.
  • 🛠️ Insert the socket fully into the opening.
  • 🛠️ Turn the socket clockwise (right) about a quarter turn until it stops and feels locked in place. Hand tight is enough

Step 7: Test the new bulb

  • 🛠️ Before putting the trunk liner back, close the trunk lightly (or hold it mostly closed so you can see the lights) and turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off).
  • 🛠️ Use the turn signal lever to activate the left or right turn signal you just replaced.
  • 🛠️ Walk to the rear of the car and confirm the new bulb flashes brightly and at a normal speed (not very fast).
  • 🛠️ If it does not light up, turn ignition OFF, reopen the trunk, and:
    • Check that the bulb is pushed in fully.
    • Check that the socket is locked fully into the housing.
    • Try swapping the bulb with the other new one in case of a bad bulb.

Step 8: Reinstall the trunk liner

  • 🛠️ Once the bulb works, turn the ignition OFF again.
  • 🛠️ Fold the trunk liner back into its normal position over the tail light area.
  • 🛠️ Use the trim clip removal tool or your fingers to reinstall the plastic clips you removed earlier. Push them in until they click.
  • 🛠️ If any clips are damaged or loose, replace them with new ones from your clip set.

Step 9: Repeat for the other side

  • 🛠️ Repeat Steps 1–8 on the other rear turn signal so both sides are new and have the same brightness and color.
  • 🛠️ Replacing bulbs in pairs helps prevent one side failing soon after the other.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the ignition ON and test left and right rear turn signals, and hazards, to confirm all flash correctly.
  • ✅ Check both rear lamps in daylight and at dusk if possible to confirm brightness and color match.
  • ✅ Make sure the trunk liner is sitting flat and no tools are left in the trunk.
