🔧 Camry - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the rear turn signal bulb by accessing the tail lamp from inside the trunk, removing the bulb socket, and installing a new bulb. This fixes fast-blinking, a dead turn signal, or a dim/incorrect color bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and keep the key fob at least 10 feet away.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching; they can get hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ No hybrid high-voltage service is needed for this job; you are working in the trunk area only.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" socket extension
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A type) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn all exterior lights OFF and open the trunk.
- Have your flashlight ready so you can clearly see the bulb socket.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Expose the rear tail lamp access area
- Use a flashlight to locate the access panel/carpeted liner behind the tail lamp inside the trunk.
- If clips are present, remove them using a trim clip removal tool. (A trim clip tool is a forked pry tool that pops plastic clips out without breaking them.)
- If a clip is tight, gently help it up with a small flathead screwdriver.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners (if your access requires it)
- Some access panels let you reach the bulb socket directly; others require loosening the lamp.
- If nuts are present, use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" socket extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
- Carefully pull the tail lamp straight outward with your hands. Pull straight back, don’t twist.
Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (usually the amber bulb position).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves to avoid touching the new bulb glass.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A type) straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp
- Reinsert the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- If you removed the tail lamp, position it back onto the body alignment pins and press it in evenly by hand.
- Install the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet: Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the trunk liner/access cover and clips using the trim clip removal tool (to press clips back in evenly).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same procedure for the other rear turn signal. Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the car to READY and test both rear turn signals.
- Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the car to confirm both rears flash at the same speed.
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove it and re-seat it firmly, then make sure the socket is fully locked.
- Check that the tail lamp sits flush against the body (helps prevent water leaks).
