🔧 Malibu - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Malibu’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the tail lamp assemblies. You’ll access them from inside the trunk, remove the bulb socket, and swap in the correct bulb type.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool—old bulbs can be very hot.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves; oils from skin can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Trim/panel removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (match the number printed on your old bulb: 3156 or 3157) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
  • Have your flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Expose the back of the tail lamp

  • Open the trunk.
  • Use the trim/panel removal tool to gently pop out the trunk liner fasteners near the tail lamp area.
  • Pull the liner back enough to reach the bulb sockets. Go slow to avoid tearing the liner.

Step 2: Identify the turn signal bulb socket

  • Use the flashlight to locate the bulb sockets on the back of the tail lamp.
  • If you’re unsure which socket is the turn signal, turn the hazards ON briefly, then OFF, and watch/feel for the socket that corresponds. (Hazards use the same bulbs as turn signals.)

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the socket firmly.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Look at the number printed on the metal or base of the bulb (commonly 3156 or 3157) so you install the exact match.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • With nitrile gloves on, push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If the socket looks dusty or corroded, wipe it gently with a clean dry cloth before installing the new bulb.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp opening.
  • Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place.

Step 7: If you had to remove the tail lamp (only if access is blocked)

  • Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Pull the tail lamp straight back to release the alignment pins.
  • After reinstalling, tighten the retaining nuts evenly: Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).
  • Don’t overtighten—plastic can crack.

Step 8: Refit the trunk liner

  • Reposition the trunk liner.
  • Press the fasteners back in by hand. If any are damaged, replace them so the liner doesn’t rattle.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test: left signal, right signal, and hazards.
  • Walk behind the Malibu and confirm the flash rate is normal (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working).
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, remove it and reseat the bulb and socket (most common issue).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)
