🔧 Sequoia - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Sequoia’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the rear tail lamp assembly. To replace it, you’ll open the liftgate, remove the tail lamp housing, twist out the bulb socket, and install a new bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t drop and scratch paint.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Sequoia on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate.
- Locate the two tail lamp retaining nuts on the inside edge of the tail lamp (accessible with the liftgate open).
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and extension to remove the two nuts.
- Set the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t get lost.
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- If it feels stuck, use a trim removal tool to gently help it pop free at the edges.
- Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn-signal socket on the back of the tail lamp (the socket that lines up with the amber turn section).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- If your bulb has a number printed on it, match that number when buying replacements.
Step 6: Quick test before reassembly
- Reinsert the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
- Turn the ignition ON and activate that turn signal to confirm it flashes normally.
- Turn ignition back OFF when confirmed.
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- Align the tail lamp’s guide pins with the body grommets and press the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
- Install the retaining nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench (in-lb) to tighten the nuts: Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs).
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same steps for the other rear turn signal.
- Replace both sides for even brightness.
✅ After Repair
- Test left and right turn signals, hazards, and brake lights.
- Make sure both tail lamps sit flush and don’t wiggle.
- If the turn signal flashes fast, recheck bulb seating and bulb type match.
