šŸ”§ Accord - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Accord’s rear turn signal bulbs sit in the tail lamp housings and can be replaced from inside the trunk. You’ll remove a small trunk liner access area, twist out the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and test the signals.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • šŸ‘“ Wear safety glasses when working under the trunk trim.
  • 🧯 Do not force the bulb socket; it should twist out smoothly.
  • šŸ”Œ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4")
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Torque wrench (in-lb)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440A / amber) - Qty: 1 (Replace in pairs: Qty 2 recommended)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • šŸš— Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧰 Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can access the trunk liner.
  • šŸ”¦ Have a flashlight ready so you can clearly see the bulb socket and tabs.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb is out

  • Turn the ignition to ON and use the turn signal stalk to test left and right signals.
  • Turn ignition OFF when you’ve confirmed which side needs the bulb.
  • Fast blinking usually means a bulb is out.

Step 2: Access the rear lamp area inside the trunk

  • Open the trunk and locate the trunk liner behind the tail lamp on the side you’re working on.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic push-clips holding the liner.
  • If needed, carefully help the clip center up with a small flathead screwdriver, then remove the clip.
  • Fold the trunk liner back to expose the tail lamp bulb sockets.

Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Identify the turn signal socket (it’s the socket that aligns with the amber turn signal portion of the lamp).
  • Unplug the connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back.
  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • A ā€œsocketā€ is the plastic holder the bulb locks into.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves and pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new 7440A / amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and reassemble trunk trim

  • Reinsert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Reposition the trunk liner and reinstall the clips by pressing them in by hand.

Step 6: If you removed any tail lamp mounting nuts (only if needed)

  • If you had to loosen/remove tail lamp nuts for access, reinstall them using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb): Torque to 5 NĀ·m (44 in-lb).
  • Snug only—overtightening can crack the lamp.

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸ” Turn ignition ON and test left and right rear turn signals.
  • šŸ›‘ Verify the bulb flashes at a normal speed and matches the other side’s brightness.
  • šŸ“¦ Make sure the trunk liner is secured so it won’t rattle.
