🔧 Frontier - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and swap the bulb. This is a simple job, but you need to pull the lamp straight back so you don’t break the locating pins/clips.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn lights off and let bulbs cool before touching them.
  • ⚠️ Support the tail lamp with your hand so it doesn’t drop and scratch paint.
  • ⚠️ Avoid touching the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life); use clean gloves.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small pick tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (match the bulb you remove) - Qty: 1
  • Rear turn signal bulb (match the bulb you remove) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to neutral, then set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the tail lamp screws.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before unplugging anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear tail lamp screws

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side facing the tailgate opening).
  • Set the screws aside where they won’t get lost.

Step 2: Pull the tail lamp straight back to release the locating pins

  • Hold the tail lamp with both hands.
  • Pull the lamp straight rearward (toward you). Do not pry outward from the body side.
  • If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently start it, then pull straight back by hand.
  • Tip: Wiggling slightly helps release the clip.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal socket on the back of the lamp (it twists out).
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it out.
  • Use a flashlight if needed to confirm you’re on the correct socket.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves to keep the bulb clean.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If the bulb is hard to remove, use a small pick tool to help lift it out gently (don’t crack the socket).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Line up the tail lamp’s locating pins with the body grommets, then push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
  • Reinstall the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) (snug only—do not overtighten plastic).

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal and hazard lights on the repaired side.
  • Confirm the tail lamp sits flush to the body and doesn’t wiggle.
  • If the bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket and rotate the bulb 180° only if it’s an LED replacement (incandescent bulbs don’t have polarity).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
