šŸ”§ Tucson - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and swap in a new bulb. This restores proper signaling and helps you stay safe and legal on the road.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: your Tucson uses replaceable rear turn-signal bulbs (not LED modules).

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and set the parking brake before starting.
  • āš ļø Let the bulbs cool first; they can get very hot.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø Support the lamp so it doesn’t scratch the paint when it comes loose.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small pick tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (1156 / BA15s) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp mounting screws.
  • Lay a clean towel on the bumper corner under the lamp area to protect paint.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Locate the two mounting screws on the inside edge of the rear tail lamp (near the liftgate opening).
  • Use a flashlight if the area is dark.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp screws

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws.
  • Set the screws somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the body.
  • On reassembly: Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).

Step 3: Release the tail lamp from the body clips

  • Grip the lamp housing with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you).
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help start the separation at the edge.
  • Pull straight back—don’t pry hard.

Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal socket on the back of the lamp (typically the amber/clear section).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb (1156 / BA15s) straight in until fully seated.
  • If the bulb is tight, use a small pick tool carefully to help wiggle it free (do not damage the socket).

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Turn the ignition to ON (engine off is fine) and switch the turn signal on.
  • Verify normal blinking speed on the dash and that the rear turn signal is bright and steady.

Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly

  • Line up the lamp’s locating pins/clips with the body holes.
  • Press the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
  • Reinstall the two screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver and Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • Test both rear turn signals and hazard lights.
  • Confirm the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.
  • If the turn signal blinks fast, re-check bulb seating and socket lock.
