🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate
- Use your hand to fully open the liftgate.
- Use a small flashlight to look at the inside edge of the tail lamp assembly.
- The rear turn signal bulb is inside the outer tail lamp assembly on the body side of your Tucson.
Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Bolt Covers
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry off the small plastic covers on the inner edge of the tail lamp.
- Work slowly so the covers do not crack.
- Tip: Pry from the small notch first.
Step 3: Remove the Tail Lamp Mounting Bolts
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the visible tail lamp mounting bolts.
- Set the bolts in a safe spot so they do not roll away.
- Factory torque for these small lamp bolts is light. During reassembly, tighten only snugly: Torque to approximately 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs).
Step 4: Pull the Tail Lamp Straight Rearward
- Use both hands to hold the tail lamp assembly.
- Pull the lamp straight back toward the rear of your Tucson.
- The lamp has hidden guide pins. Pulling straight back helps prevent breaking them.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool gently at the outer edge while pulling with your hand.
- Tip: Do not twist the lamp sideways.
Step 5: Locate the Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Use a small flashlight to look at the back of the tail lamp assembly.
- Find the rear turn signal bulb socket. It is the socket for the amber turn signal bulb.
- A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp housing.
Step 6: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to turn the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 7: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use clean nitrile gloves to grip the old bulb.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket if it is a wedge-style bulb.
- If the bulb has small side pins, press it down slightly and turn it counterclockwise, then pull it out.
- Check the socket for heat damage, melting, corrosion, or loose contacts.
Step 8: Install the New Turn Signal Bulb
- Use clean nitrile gloves to handle the new rear amber turn signal bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- If it is a bayonet-style bulb with side pins, insert it, press down slightly, and turn clockwise until locked.
- Tip: Match the old bulb base shape.
Step 9: Test the Bulb Before Reinstalling the Lamp
- Keep the bulb socket hanging safely away from sharp edges.
- Turn the ignition to accessory mode or press the hazard switch.
- Check that the new rear turn signal bulb flashes normally.
- Turn the hazard switch off after testing.
- If it does not light, remove the bulb by hand, rotate it 180 degrees if wedge-style, reinstall it, and test again.
Step 10: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise until it locks firmly.
- Make sure the rubber seal sits flat so water cannot enter the lamp.
Step 11: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly
- Use both hands to align the tail lamp guide pins with the body openings.
- Push the lamp straight forward until it seats evenly against the body.
- Do not force it. If it does not sit flush, pull it back and realign the pins.
Step 12: Tighten the Tail Lamp Bolts
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall the tail lamp mounting bolts.
- Tighten the bolts evenly until snug.
- Torque to approximately 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs).
- Use your hand to snap the plastic bolt covers back into place.
Step 13: Final Light Check
- Use your hand to turn on the hazard lights.
- Walk behind your Tucson and confirm both rear turn signals flash evenly.
- Use the turn signal stalk to check left and right operation separately.
- Close the liftgate when finished.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Make sure the turn signal no longer flashes rapidly.
- ✅ Confirm the tail lamp sits flush with the body.
- ✅ Check that the liftgate opens and closes without touching the lamp.
- ✅ After the next rain or wash, inspect the lamp for moisture inside.
