šŸ”§ Tacoma - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Tacoma’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail lamp assembly. Replacing it involves removing the tail lamp housing, swapping the bulb, and confirming the turn signal and hazard lights work normally.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and lights OFF before starting.
  • āš ļø Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
  • āš ļø Wear gloves; don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers.
  • āš ļø Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t scratch paint when it comes loose.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift into Park.
  • Make sure the light switch is OFF and remove the key.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the tail lamp fasteners.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the tailgate by hand.
  • Locate the two tail lamp mounting bolts on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side closest to the tailgate opening).
  • Use a flashlight to see the bolt heads clearly.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the two bolts.
  • Set the bolts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the bumper area.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Grab the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you). It’s held by alignment pins (plastic pegs).
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool to gently help it start moving—do not pry hard against painted metal.
  • Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Look at the back of the tail lamp and identify the turn signal bulb socket (typically the amber bulb position).
  • Use nitrile gloves and rotate the socket counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it out.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Optional: apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (a rubber ring) to help keep moisture out.
  • Don’t get grease on the bulb glass.

Step 6: Test the turn signal before reassembly

  • Reinsert the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock it by hand.
  • Turn the ignition ON and test the rear turn signal and hazards.
  • If it doesn’t work, turn ignition OFF and recheck bulb seating and socket lock.

Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly

  • Align the tail lamp’s locator pins with the body holes, then push the lamp straight forward until it sits flush.
  • Install the two bolts using a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)

āœ… After Repair

  • Test left and right rear turn signals and hazard lights again.
  • Walk around the truck to confirm brightness matches the other side.
  • If the turn signal blinks fast, the bulb may be incorrect or not seated.
