🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the tail lamp screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side facing the tailgate opening).
- Set the screws aside where they won’t get lost.
- Torque: Toyota does not list a service torque here—tighten screws snug until the lamp is fully seated (do not overtighten).
Step 2: Pull the tail lamp straight back
- Grip the tail lamp housing with both hands and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool to gently help separate the lamp from the body. Don’t pry with a metal screwdriver.
Step 3: Find the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to see the bulb sockets at the back of the tail lamp.
- Locate the turn signal socket (usually the amber/clear section used for blinking).
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the tail lamp.
- If it’s slippery, use work gloves for grip.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (no tools needed).
- Use a clean paper towel to handle the new bulb and push it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Match the bulb number printed on the old bulb.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise until it locks by hand.
- Align the tail lamp locating pins with the body holes, then push the lamp straight in until fully seated.
- Reinstall the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Torque: snug only; stop as soon as the lamp is secure and flush.
âś… After Repair
- Turn ignition to ON and test the repaired side turn signal.
- Test hazards and brake lights to confirm the tail lamp connectors are seated.
- If it blinks fast, the bulb may be incorrect, not seated, or another turn bulb is out.
- Check the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle (prevents water leaks).
