This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulb in the tail lamp assembly. On your Tacoma, the rear turn signal bulb is accessed by removing the tail lamp from the bedside, then twisting the bulb socket out from the back of the lamp.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working on the lights.

- ⚠️ Do not pull hard on the tail lamp wiring. Support the lamp with one hand.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves or handle the glass bulb carefully. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

- 💡 Turn the headlight switch and hazard switch off.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- 📦 Open the tailgate fully to access the tail lamp retaining bolts.
- ℹ️ A socket is a small metal tool that fits over a bolt head; the ratchet turns the socket.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Tailgate
- Use your hands to lower the tailgate completely.
- Look at the inside edge of the tail lamp. You will see two retaining bolts.
- Keep one hand on the lamp later.
Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Bolts
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the two tail lamp bolts.
- Set the bolts in a safe place so they do not fall into the bed gap.
Step 3: Pull the Tail Lamp Straight Rearward
- Hold the tail lamp with both hands.
- Pull the lamp straight back toward the rear of your Tacoma.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool gently at the outer edge to help release the locating pins.
- Do not twist the lamp sharply. The wiring is still attached.
- Plastic trim tools prevent paint scratches.
Step 4: Identify the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Look at the back of the tail lamp assembly.
- The rear turn signal bulb socket is the socket for the amber turn signal bulb.
- A socket here means the plastic bulb holder that twists into the lamp housing.
Step 5: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to turn the rear turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 6: Replace the Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If using a glass bulb, avoid touching the glass with bare fingers.
- Match the old bulb shape before installing.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
- Make sure the socket sits flat and secure.
Step 8: Test the Turn Signal
- Use your hand to turn the ignition key to ON, but do not start the engine.
- Turn on the left or right turn signal for the side you repaired.
- Confirm the new rear turn signal bulb flashes normally.
- Turn the ignition and turn signal off after testing.
Step 9: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly
- Use your hands to align the locating pins on the tail lamp with the body openings.
- Push the lamp straight forward until it seats against the bedside.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the two bolts.
- Tighten the bolts snugly by hand with the ratchet. Do not overtighten, because the lamp housing can crack.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
Step 10: Final Check
- Use your hand to turn on the turn signal again.
- Confirm the rear bulb flashes at the same speed as the front bulb.
- Close the tailgate once everything works correctly.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check both rear turn signals and hazard lights.
- ✅ If the turn signal still flashes fast, the bulb may not be seated correctly or the wrong bulb type may be installed.
- ✅ Make sure the tail lamp sits flush against the body and does not wiggle.
- ✅ No scan tool, coding, or reset is required for this repair.
