šŸ”§ E-150 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your E-150, the rear turn signal is built into the tail lamp assembly (it’s typically the same bulb used for brake/turn). You’ll remove the tail lamp lens housing, twist out the bulb socket, and swap the bulb without touching the glass with bare fingers.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let bulbs cool if they were just on (they can burn you).
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this bulb replacement.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Small flat-head screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear stop/turn bulb - Qty: 1 (replace in pairs recommended)
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear cargo doors to access the tail lamp screws.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Open the rear doors so you can see the tail lamp mounting screws.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the tail lamp to the body.
  • Gently pull the tail lamp straight back to release it from the locating pins.
  • If it feels stuck, use a small flat-head screwdriver carefully at the edge to help start it moving. Go slow to avoid cracking plastic.

Step 2: Identify the turn-signal bulb socket

  • Look at the bulb sockets on the back of the tail lamp.
  • The rear turn signal on your E-150 is typically the same bulb as the brake light (a dual-filament bulb).
  • Twist one socket at a time (about 1/4 turn) by hand and pull it out to find the correct one.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Hold the socket firmly and pull the bulb straight out by hand.
  • If it’s stubborn, use the clean shop towel to improve grip and pull straight (don’t twist unless the bulb base design requires it).
  • Check the bulb number printed on the base and match it to the replacement bulb to avoid installing the wrong type.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves (or hold the bulb with the clean shop towel) and press the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a very light smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal area if it looks dry (don’t pack the socket full).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist by hand until it locks.
  • Line up the tail lamp locating pins and push the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the screws using the Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten snug. Snug is enough—don’t overtighten.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the key to RUN and test: right turn, left turn, hazards, and brake lights.
  • If the turn signal blinks fast, that usually means a bulb is out or the wrong bulb type is installed—recheck seating and bulb number.
  • Make sure the tail lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $5-$25 (parts only)

You Save: $35-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
