Your Civic’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the tail light housings and are accessed from inside the trunk. You’ll remove a small trunk liner cover, twist out the bulb socket, and swap in a new bulb.

• Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Open the trunk and use a flashlight to find the access area behind the tail light.
• A plastic trim panel tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps remove clips without tearing the liner.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail light bulb area

• Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
• In the trunk, locate the trunk liner cover/door behind the tail light on the side you’re replacing.
• If there are clips, gently pop them out using a plastic trim panel tool.
• If there’s a small screw, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 2: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

• Use a flashlight to identify the turn signal bulb socket (it’s one of the smaller bulb sockets in the tail light housing).
• Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand (use nitrile gloves for grip).
• Pull the socket straight out.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

• Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (use nitrile gloves).
• Push the new 7440 amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
• If you touched the glass, wipe it clean.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and close the trunk liner

• Insert the socket back into the tail light housing.
• Rotate the socket clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
• Reinstall the trunk liner cover: press clips back in by hand, or reinstall the screw using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

• Repeat Steps 1–4 on the other rear tail light so both bulbs match in brightness and color.

• Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals, plus hazards.
• Confirm the blink rate is normal (fast blinking usually means a bulb isn’t seated or is the wrong type).
• Make sure the trunk liner is secured so it won’t rattle.
