🔧 Civic - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll access the rear turn signal bulb from inside the trunk, remove the bulb socket, and swap in a new bulb. This restores rear signaling so other drivers can see your turns and hazards clearly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours
Assumption: Your Civic uses a 7440/7440A-style rear turn bulb (common on this model); HowToo will match by fitment.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ If the bulbs were recently on, let the tail lamp cool 5–10 minutes.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the trunk trim so clips don’t snap.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Trim clip removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Trim panel clips - Qty: 2-6
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can reach the trunk side trim.
- Have your flashlight ready; it’s dark behind the liner.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which side bulb you’re replacing
- Turn the ignition to ON and activate the turn signal or hazards.
- Walk behind the car to confirm which rear turn signal is out, then turn everything OFF.
Step 2: Open up access to the rear lamp area (inside trunk)
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic retainers holding the trunk side liner near the tail lamp.
- If your liner has a small access door, open it. If not, gently peel the liner back.
- Tip: Pry the clip center first, then the body.
Step 3: Locate the rear turn signal socket
- Use a flashlight and look at the back side of the tail lamp assembly.
- Find the bulb socket going into the lamp (a round plastic “twist-lock” fitting).
- A twist-lock socket is a socket that locks by turning about 1/8–1/4 turn.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise by hand.
- If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for grip (do not use pliers unless absolutely necessary).
- Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
- Tip: Don’t touch the bulb glass.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Turn the ignition to ON and test the turn signal and hazards.
- If it doesn’t light, turn OFF and remove/re-seat the bulb and socket.
Step 7: Reinstall trunk trim
- Reposition the trunk liner.
- Press the clips back in by hand, or replace any broken clips with new ones.
- If any screws are present, reinstall using a Phillips screwdriver.
✅ After Repair
- Verify left and right rear turn signals both flash at a normal speed.
- Check hazards and brake lights to make sure the liner isn’t pinching wiring.
- If the signal still “hyper-flashes,” replace the bulb on the other side as well (bulbs age together).
