🔧 Civic - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Civic’s rear turn signal bulbs sit in the rear tail lamp area and can be replaced from inside the trunk. You’ll open the trunk, access the bulb socket behind the tail lamp, swap the bulb, and confirm the turn signal flashes normally.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the tail lamp area cool if the lights were just on.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support trunk liners so they don’t tear or crease.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440A amber) - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 2 if replacing both sides)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can reach the trunk side trim.
  • Tip: Replace both sides for matching brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear tail lamp area from the trunk

  • Open the trunk.
  • Use a flashlight to find the trunk side liner behind the tail lamp on the side you’re replacing.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic push-clips holding the liner/access flap.
  • If your liner uses screws instead of clips, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2.

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Reach behind the tail lamp and locate the turn signal bulb socket (one of the twist-lock sockets).
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull the socket straight out.
  • Tip: If tight, wiggle gently—don’t force.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new 7440A amber bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If the bulb you removed has a different number printed on it, match that number when buying the replacement.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and trunk liner

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp.
  • Turn the socket clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
  • Reposition the trunk liner and reinstall the clips using the trim clip removal tool (press clips in), or reinstall screws with the Phillips screwdriver #2.

Step 5: Test the turn signal

  • Turn the ignition to ON.
  • Switch on that side turn signal and walk behind the car to confirm it flashes normally.
  • If it doesn’t work: re-check the socket is fully locked and the bulb is fully seated.

âś… After Repair

  • Confirm left and right turn signals both flash at a normal speed.
  • Confirm hazard lights work.
  • If the turn signal flashes fast, that usually means a bulb is out or not seated correctly on one side.
