🔧 Sonata - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll access the rear turn signal bulb from inside the trunk, remove the bulb socket, and swap in a new bulb. This restores proper signaling and keeps you legal and safe on the road.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes; they can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and don’t touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Keep the trunk propped securely so it can’t fall on you.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel removal tool (plastic)
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Small flathead screwdriver (3mm)
  • Work light
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧰 Open the trunk and set up a work light so you can see behind the trunk liner.
  • 🧩 A trim panel removal tool is a plastic pry tool used to pop clips without breaking them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear lamp area from the trunk

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool (plastic) to gently pop out the trunk liner clips near the rear corner you’re working on.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver (3mm) to lift the clip’s center, then pry the clip body out with the trim panel removal tool (plastic).

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Use your work light to locate the bulb sockets on the back of the tail lamp.
  • Find the turn signal socket (it will be a twist-lock socket going into the tail lamp).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
  • Don’t yank the wires.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you touched the bulb glass, wipe it with a clean dry paper towel before installing.

Step 4: Test the new bulb before reassembly

  • Reinsert the socket into the tail lamp.
  • Twist the socket clockwise by hand about 1/4 turn until it locks.
  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal (and hazards).
  • If it doesn’t work, turn ignition OFF and remove the socket again, then reinstall the bulb firmly and re-lock the socket.

Step 5: Reinstall the trunk liner

  • Position the trunk liner back into place.
  • Press the clips back in by hand. If needed, use a Phillips screwdriver #2 to snug any screw-type retainers (do not overtighten).

Assumption: Rear turn signal bulbs are accessed through the trunk on your Sonata (no tail lamp removal required).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Verify left and right rear turn signals blink normally (not fast).
  • ✅ Check hazards, brake lights, and tail lights to make sure no other socket was disturbed.
  • ✅ Make sure the trunk liner is secure and not rubbing any wiring.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
