🔧 Highlander - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the rear tail lamp assemblies. The job is mostly gaining access, removing the lamp, swapping the bulb, then reinstalling without breaking the plastic alignment pins.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF, remove the key, and let bulbs cool before touching.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; the lamp edges and trim can be sharp.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp while unplugging so it doesn’t drop and crack.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which side bulb you’re replacing
- Turn the ignition to ON and activate the left or right turn signal.
- Walk to the rear and confirm which side is out, then turn ignition OFF and remove the key.
Step 2: Access the rear tail lamp mounting nuts
- Open the hatch and go to the inside edge of the tail lamp area (cargo-side trim next to the lamp).
- Use a trim removal tool to pop off the small access cover(s) in the interior trim (if equipped).
- Use a flashlight to locate the tail lamp retaining nuts behind the trim.
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
- With both hands, pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Wiggle straight back, don’t pry outward.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Identify the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp (you’ll see a twist-lock socket).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out of the housing.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the tail lamp’s guide pins with the body holes, then push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Use an inch-pound torque wrench (specialty) and 10mm socket: Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the interior access cover(s) using the trim removal tool to press clips back in evenly.
✅ After Repair
- Turn ignition ON and test left/right turn signals and hazards.
