🔧 Highlander - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Highlander’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the outer tail lamp assemblies. The job is mostly removing the tail lamp, swapping the bulb, and reinstalling everything so the lamp seals correctly and doesn’t rattle.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • 🧊 Let bulbs cool if they were recently on (they get hot).
  • 🧼 Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life. Use gloves or a clean rag.
  • 🪛 Pull the tail lamp straight back—don’t pry hard on the painted body.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber rag

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440 / 7440A equivalent) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🚪 Open the rear liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • 🧽 Lay a clean rag on the bumper edge under the lamp area to help prevent scratches.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate.
  • At the inside edge of the tail lamp (near the liftgate opening), locate the fasteners/covers.
  • If there’s a small cover, use a plastic trim removal tool to pop it off carefully.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts/screws

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 3" extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts (typically 2).
  • If your lamp has an additional screw, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Tip: Keep nuts in a cup so they don’t disappear.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Hold the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
  • If it feels stuck, gently wiggle while pulling—do not lever hard against the paint.

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (it’s one of the twist-lock sockets).
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it and pull it out.
  • If it’s tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the socket tabs (don’t crush it).

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Using work gloves or a clean microfiber rag, push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
  • Reinstall the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.

Step 6: Reinstall the tail lamp

  • Line up the lamp’s alignment pins with the body holes, then push the lamp straight forward until it sits flush.
  • Reinstall the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbf)
  • Reinstall any covers with a plastic trim removal tool.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–6 for the other rear turn signal.
  • Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔁 Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals and hazards.
  • 👀 Confirm the tail lamp sits even with the body and doesn’t wiggle.
  • 💧 After a car wash or rain, check for moisture inside the lamp (sign of a sealing/fit issue).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹800–₹2,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹200–₹600 (parts only)

You Save: ₹600–₹1,400 by doing it yourself!
