šŸ”§ Highlander - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and swap the bulb. This restores rear signaling so other drivers can see your turns clearly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Your Highlander uses a 7440 amber rear turn signal bulb.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let bulbs cool if they were recently on; they can burn you.
  • āš ļø Wear gloves to keep oil off the new bulb glass (oil can shorten bulb life).
  • āš ļø Support the tail lamp with your hand so it doesn’t drop and crack.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 Optional

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate fully for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Have your flashlight ready so you can see the bulb socket orientation.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Locate the tail lamp mounting area on the side you’re working on (inside edge of the lamp, visible with the liftgate open).
  • Use a flashlight to identify the 10mm fasteners and any small trim covers.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp mounting fasteners

  • If there’s a small cover hiding a fastener, gently pry it with a plastic trim removal tool.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Place the fasteners somewhere safe so they don’t roll away.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Hold the lamp with both hands.
  • Pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins/clips. Don’t twist; pull straight.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling; do not use a metal tool on painted surfaces.

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (it will twist-lock into the housing).
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for better grip.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
  • Install the new 7440 amber bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Optional: Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass or metal contacts). Dielectric grease helps prevent moisture and corrosion.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test the turn signal

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Turn the ignition to ON and test that side’s rear turn signal (and hazards). Use your flashlight to confirm the bulb lights.
  • If it doesn’t work: remove the socket and re-seat the bulb firmly, then test again.

Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly

  • Align the lamp’s locating pins with the body holes.
  • Press the lamp straight inward until it sits flush.
  • Reinstall the fasteners using a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Torque to 5 NĀ·m (44 in-lbs)
  • Reinstall any trim covers using the plastic trim removal tool (press them in by hand).

Step 8: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the bulb on the other rear lamp using the same steps. Matching bulbs look more even.

āœ… After Repair

  • Test left and right rear turn signals and hazard lights.
  • Confirm the tail lamp is seated evenly and there are no gaps.
  • Over the next few days, check inside the lens for condensation (a sign the seal/socket isn’t fully locked).
