🔧 Highlander - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Highlander’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the outer tail lamp assemblies on the left and right rear corners. The job is mainly removing the tail lamp, swapping the bulb, and reinstalling everything so the lamp seals properly and doesn’t rattle.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let the tail lamps cool before touching bulbs or sockets.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp as you pull it out so you don’t scratch paint or crack the lens.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" socket extension
- Plastic trim removal tool set
- Nitrile gloves

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
- Lay a clean microfiber towel on the bumper corner below the lamp to protect the paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which side you’re replacing
- Turn the hazards ON briefly, then OFF, to confirm left or right bulb is out.
- Fast blink usually means a bulb is burned out.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts
- With the liftgate open, locate the two tail lamp fasteners on the inside edge of the lamp (near the liftgate opening).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool set to pop off any small access covers (a trim tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps prevent scratches).
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 3" socket extension to remove the retaining nuts/bolts.
Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly out
- Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you) to release the alignment pins.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—do not pry with a screwdriver.
Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal socket on the back of the tail lamp (the socket that matches the turn signal section of the lens).
- Rotate the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440 type) straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test before reassembly
- Insert the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise by hand to lock.
- Turn the hazards ON to verify the new bulb flashes normally, then turn them OFF.
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- Line up the guide pins with the body holes and press the lamp straight into place.
- Install the retaining nuts/bolts by hand first (to avoid cross-threading).
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to tighten: Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Reinstall any access covers using the plastic trim removal tool set (press in by hand).
Step 8: Repeat on the other side (recommended)
- Replace the other rear turn signal bulb so both sides match in brightness and color.
âś… After Repair
- Test left turn, right turn, hazards, and brake lights.
- Make sure the tail lamp sits flush with the body (no gaps).
- If you see moisture inside the lens later, recheck that the socket is fully locked and the lamp is seated evenly.
