🔧 4Runner - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This job replaces the rear turn signal bulbs inside the tail lamp assemblies. A burnt bulb (or wrong bulb type) can cause a fast-blink turn signal and reduced visibility.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: factory tail lamps with non-LED rear turn bulbs.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- 🔥 Let the tail lamps cool if they were recently on.
- 🧤 Wear gloves; oils from fingers can shorten bulb life.
- ⚡ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension (1/4")
- Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (7440A / amber) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🚪 Open the rear liftgate for access to both tail lamps.
- 🧰 Set your trim tool and 10mm tools nearby so you don’t scratch paint reaching for them.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the tail lamp mounting covers
- Use the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pop off the two small interior covers on the inside edge of the tail lamp (they hide the nuts).
- Pry slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp nuts
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension (1/4") to remove the two 10mm nuts.
- Put the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the bumper area.
Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly outward
- With both nuts removed, grab the tail lamp and pull it straight back (away from the body).
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling; alignment pins hold it in place.
- Pull straight back to protect the pins.
Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal socket on the back of the tail lamp (the socket that matches the turn signal bulb position).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- A “bulb socket” is the plastic holder that locks into the lamp and holds the bulb.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new Rear turn signal bulb (7440A / amber) straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
- Before reinstalling the tail lamp, turn the ignition to ON and test the turn signal and hazards.
- If it doesn’t light, turn the ignition off and re-seat the bulb and socket.
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- Line up the tail lamp’s alignment pins with the body holes and press the lamp straight into place.
- Install the two nuts by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten with the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)
- Snap the two covers back on using firm hand pressure.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same steps on the opposite tail lamp.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
âś… After Repair
- 🔎 Verify left and right turn signals blink normally (not fast).
- 🚨 Test hazards and brake lights to confirm nothing else was disturbed.
- 💧 After the next car wash or rain, check for any moisture inside the tail lamp (a sign the assembly didn’t seat fully).
