🔧 Forester - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, swap the turn-signal bulb, then reinstall everything. This fixes a burned-out signal, fast blinking, or a bulb-out warning.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and set the parking brake before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of an incandescent bulb with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp as you pull it out so you don’t crack the lens or scratch paint.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Phillips #2 screwdriver

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Forester on level ground and open the liftgate.
- Turn all exterior lights OFF and remove the key.
- Lay a clean rag on the bumper corner below the tail lamp to protect paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access and locate the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate and look at the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side closest to the liftgate opening).
- You should see the tail lamp retaining screws.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the tail lamp screws.
- Set the screws aside somewhere safe.
- Push firmly to avoid stripping.
Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly outward
- Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (away from the body).
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it release from the alignment pins.
- Do not pry against the painted body edge; pry only at the lamp-to-body seam gently.
Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Behind the lamp, find the turn signal socket (it’s one of the twist-lock bulb holders).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the tail lamp.
- If it’s tight, use a clean rag for extra grip.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
- Twist clockwise by hand until it stops and feels snug.
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- Align the tail lamp’s locating pins with the body grommets.
- Press the lamp straight inward until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten snug (do not overtighten).
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same procedure for the opposite rear turn signal.
- Replacing both helps match brightness/color.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
- Verify the turn signals flash at normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working or seated).
- Check that the tail lamp sits flush and doesn’t rattle.
