You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, swap the turn-signal bulb, then reinstall everything. This fixes a fast-blinking signal (often caused by a burnt bulb) and restores proper visibility to other drivers.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and the light switch OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool; they can get hot.

- Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440/7440A) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs (left + right)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear liftgate and clear the rear cargo area so you can access the side panels.
- Have your new bulb ready. The bulb type is often printed on the old bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp mounting nuts
- Open the liftgate.
- Use a flashlight to find the small access cover/panel behind the rear tail lamp area inside the cargo trim.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pop the access cover open (a trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps prevent scratches).
Step 2: Remove the rear tail lamp assembly
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the two tail lamp nuts.
- Support the lamp with one hand as the last nut comes off.
- From outside the vehicle, grasp the lamp and pull it straight rearward to release the locating pins/clips.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—don’t pry on the paint.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp (it’s a twist-lock socket).
- Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440/7440A) straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp
- Insert the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the lamp’s locating pins with the body holes, then push the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the two nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Use a torque wrench: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Snap the access cover back into place.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other rear turn signal. Replacing both keeps brightness even.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
- Turn on hazards and confirm both rear turn signals flash evenly.
- If it still blinks fast, recheck bulb seating and socket lock-in.
- Confirm the tail lamp sits flush and doesn’t wobble.
