🔧 Forester - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your rear turn signal bulbs are inside the tail lamp assemblies at the back of your Forester. You’ll access the bulb sockets from inside the cargo area, swap the bulb, then test the signals to make sure both sides flash normally.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot if recently used.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the rear hatch securely while working in the cargo area.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim clip tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear hatch and clear the cargo area so you can reach the side panels.
  • Have a plastic trim clip tool ready (a non-metal pry tool used to pop trim clips without breaking them).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp service opening

  • Open the hatch and use a flashlight to look at the side trim inside the cargo area (left side for driver, right side for passenger).
  • Remove the small access cover (if equipped) by gently prying with a plastic trim clip tool.

Step 2: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Reach through the opening and locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp.
  • Grip the socket firmly and turn it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If the socket is stuck, use nitrile gloves for better grip. Wiggle gently, don’t force it

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting for this style).
  • Install the new 7440 amber bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Avoid touching the glass with bare hands; use nitrile gloves.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and trim cover

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and turn clockwise until it locks.
  • Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back in place by hand (use a plastic trim clip tool only if needed to align clips).

Step 5: If you cannot reach the socket (alternate method: remove the tail lamp)

  • Remove the interior side trim fasteners near the tail lamp area using a plastic trim clip tool and a Phillips #2 screwdriver (if screws are present).
  • Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Carefully pull the tail lamp straight back to release the alignment pins.
  • Replace the bulb as in Steps 2–4.
  • Reinstall the tail lamp nuts and Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the rear to confirm both sides flash evenly.
  • If the turn signal “hyper-flashes,” recheck that the bulb is fully seated and the correct type.
  • Make sure the access covers and trim clips are fully snapped back in place to prevent rattles.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $50-$120 (parts + labor)
