🔧 Prius - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Prius uses a removable bulb socket inside the rear tail lamp. You’ll open the small access panel in the cargo area, twist the turn-signal socket out, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and keep the key fob 15+ feet away so lights can’t turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ No high-voltage work is involved, but avoid disturbing orange high-voltage wiring.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440 / WY21W amber) - Qty: 1
  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440 / WY21W amber) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the car OFF and remove all key fobs from the area.
  • Open the hatch and clear the cargo area so you can reach the side access panels.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the rear access panel

  • Open the hatch and look at the inside side trim near the tail lamp area (left or right side).
  • Use a small flashlight to find the small service door/cover in the trim.
  • Pry the cover open carefully using a plastic trim removal tool set (a trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps avoid scratches).

Step 2: Locate the turn-signal bulb socket

  • Look into the opening and find the bulb sockets on the back of the tail lamp.
  • The turn signal socket is typically the amber-bulb position (often mid/lower area in the assembly).
  • Use a small flashlight to confirm you’re on the correct socket.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the socket firmly by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn until it unlocks, then pull it straight out.
  • Wiggle gently—don’t yank the wires.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old rear turn signal bulb (7440 / WY21W amber) straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a dry, clean cloth while wearing nitrile gloves.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp opening, lining up the tabs.
  • Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks snugly by hand.
  • Torque: Not applicable (hand-tight only).

Step 6: Test the turn signal

  • With the hatch still open, turn the car to READY and switch on the turn signal for that side.
  • Verify normal blinking speed and that the bulb lights bright amber.
  • Turn the car OFF again before closing up trim.

Step 7: Refit the access cover

  • Snap the access cover back into place by hand.
  • If you used a plastic trim removal tool set, confirm you didn’t leave any clips loose.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both rear turn signals and hazard lights to ensure everything works.
  • If the turn signal blinks fast, re-seat the bulb and socket; a loose connection can cause rapid flashing.
  • If moisture appears in the lamp later, recheck that the socket seal is seated evenly.
