🔧 Prius - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Prius uses a replaceable bulb for the rear turn signals. The job is done from inside the hatch area by removing a small access cover, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸 Power the car OFF and keep the key fob away (at least 10 ft) so lights can’t turn on unexpectedly.
- 🔸 Let bulbs cool before touching them (they can get hot).
- 🔸 Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the vehicle OFF.
- Open the hatch and remove any cargo so you can access the side trim areas.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the rear access cover (left or right side)
- Open the hatch.
- On the side you’re replacing (driver or passenger), locate the small service/access cover in the interior trim behind the tail lamp area.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop the access cover open.
- If it’s tight, carefully assist with a small flathead screwdriver (wrap the tip with a little tape if you have it). Go slow to avoid scuffs.
Step 2: Remove the turn-signal bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to look through the opening and find the turn signal bulb socket (it will be one of the sockets going into the tail lamp).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
- If your hand slips, use nitrile gloves for better grip.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand using nitrile gloves.
- Push the new 7440A amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Bulb tip: This is a “wedge” bulb—no twisting to remove/install.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and access cover
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
- Twist the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn by hand until it locks.
- Snap the interior access cover back into place.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side (recommended)
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the opposite rear turn signal. Pair replacement helps match brightness.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the car ON (READY not required) and test left and right turn signals.
- Walk behind the car and confirm the flash rate looks normal on both sides (a fast flash usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
- If one side doesn’t work, remove that socket again and re-seat the bulb firmly.
