🔧 Grand Cherokee - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulbs on your Grand Cherokee. The outer rear lamp housings are removed from the body, then the turn signal bulb sockets are unlocked from the back of each lamp.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition and exterior lights off before removing the bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the hazard lights or turn signals were recently used.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses when working around plastic clips.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of new bulbs with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Rear lamp retaining clips - Optional, replace if damaged - Qty: 2-4

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground.
  • 🔒 Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • 🚨 Make sure the hazard lights are OFF.
  • 🚪 Open the liftgate fully.
  • 🧤 Put on clean nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the liftgate and find the left lamp retainers

  • Use the flashlight to look along the inner edge of the left rear lamp housing.
  • Find the plastic push-pin retainers holding the lamp to the body.
  • A push-pin retainer is a plastic clip with a center pin that expands the clip when installed.

Step 2: Remove the left lamp retainers

  • Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently lift the center pin of each retainer.
  • Use your fingers to pull the retainer body out once the center pin is raised.
  • Place the retainers on a shop towel so they do not roll away.
  • Torque to hand-tight only when reinstalling plastic retainers.

Step 3: Remove the left rear lamp housing

  • Use both hands to hold the lamp housing firmly.
  • Pull the lamp straight rearward, away from the vehicle.
  • Do not pry against the paint with a metal tool.
  • The outer side uses alignment pins, so the lamp should come straight out.
  • Pull steady, not sharply.

Step 4: Remove the left rear turn signal socket

  • Use the flashlight to identify the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the housing.
  • The turn signal socket is the socket for the amber flashing lamp.
  • Use your hand to turn the socket counterclockwise about one-quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp.

Step 5: Replace the left rear turn signal bulb

  • Use clean nitrile gloves to grip the old bulb.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated.
  • If the bulb has a wedge base, it simply pushes in and pulls out.
  • A wedge base is a flat plastic bulb base with metal contacts on the sides.

Step 6: Reinstall the left turn signal socket

  • Use your hand to insert the socket into the lamp housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about one-quarter turn until it locks.
  • Confirm the socket sits flat and does not wobble.

Step 7: Test the left rear turn signal

  • Use the turn signal stalk to switch on the left turn signal.
  • Stand behind the vehicle and confirm the left rear turn signal flashes normally.
  • Turn the signal off before reinstalling the housing.
  • If an LED replacement bulb does not light, use clean nitrile gloves to remove it, rotate it 180 degrees, and reinstall it.

Step 8: Reinstall the left rear lamp housing

  • Use both hands to line up the guide pins with the body openings.
  • Push the lamp housing straight forward until it sits flush with the body.
  • Use your hand to reinstall the plastic retainers.
  • Push the center pins down until they sit flush.
  • Torque to hand-tight only; do not over-force the plastic retainers.

Step 9: Replace the right rear turn signal bulb

  • Use the flashlight to locate the right rear lamp retainers.
  • Use the plastic trim removal tool to lift the center pins and remove the retainers.
  • Use both hands to pull the right rear lamp housing straight rearward.
  • Use your hand to turn the turn signal socket counterclockwise about one-quarter turn.
  • Use clean nitrile gloves to pull the old bulb straight out.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until seated.
  • Use your hand to reinstall the socket and turn it clockwise until locked.
  • Use both hands to align and reinstall the lamp housing.
  • Use your hand to reinstall the plastic retainers and push the center pins flush.

Step 10: Final function check

  • Use the turn signal stalk to test the left rear turn signal.
  • Use the turn signal stalk to test the right rear turn signal.
  • Use the hazard light switch to confirm both rear turn signals flash together.
  • Check that both rear lamp housings are flush and secure.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm the turn signals blink at a normal speed.
  • ✅ If one side blinks very fast, that usually means the bulb is not seated, the wrong bulb is installed, or an LED bulb is not compatible.
  • ✅ Check the instrument cluster for any bulb-out warning.
  • ✅ If using LED bulbs, make sure they are CAN-bus compatible to avoid warnings or hyper-flashing.
