🔧 Grand Cherokee - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces the rear amber turn signal bulb inside the tail lamp assembly on your Grand Cherokee. A burned-out rear turn signal can make lane changes unsafe and may cause the indicator to flash quickly on the dash.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground and switch the ignition fully off before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the rear lights cool if they were recently on.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Put your Grand Cherokee in Park and set the parking brake.
- 🔌 Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
- 🚪 Open the liftgate fully so you can access the inner edge of the tail lamp.
- 💡 Identify the failed side by turning on the hazard lights, then turn them off before working.
- 🧤 Wear clean nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate
- Use your hand to open the rear liftgate fully.
- Make sure the liftgate is stable and not trying to close while you work.
- Good lighting helps avoid dropped screws.
Step 2: Remove the Inner Tail Lamp Fasteners
- Use the T30 Torx screwdriver to remove the two Torx screws on the inner edge of the tail lamp assembly.
- Set the screws somewhere safe so they do not roll away.
- A Torx screwdriver has a star-shaped tip that fits Jeep’s tail lamp screws.
Step 3: Release the Tail Lamp Assembly
- Use the trim panel removal tool at the outer edge of the tail lamp to gently help release the locating pins.
- A trim panel removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps prevent paint and lens damage.
- Pull the lamp straight rearward with both hands.
- Do not twist the lamp hard; the outer side uses guide pins that can crack if forced sideways.
- Pull straight back, not outward.
Step 4: Locate the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Use your hands to support the lamp so the wiring is not stretched.
- Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp assembly.
- The turn signal socket is typically the amber bulb position in the rear lamp cluster.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use your hand to rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- Use clean nitrile gloves to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling straight out.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use clean nitrile gloves to push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a clean microfiber cloth.
- Do not use tools to force the bulb into the socket.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp housing.
- Rotate the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
- Make sure the socket seal sits flat to help keep water out.
Step 8: Test the Turn Signal Before Final Assembly
- Use the turn signal stalk or hazard switch to test the new bulb.
- Confirm the rear turn signal flashes normally.
- Turn the signal or hazards off before reinstalling the lamp.
- If it does not light, remove the bulb with your gloved hand, rotate it 180 degrees if applicable, reinstall it, and test again.
Step 9: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly
- Use both hands to line up the tail lamp guide pins with the body openings.
- Push the lamp straight forward until it seats evenly against the body.
- Make sure the gaps around the lamp look even.
Step 10: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Screws
- Use the T30 Torx screwdriver to reinstall the two tail lamp screws.
- Tighten them snugly by hand only.
- Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs)
- Do not overtighten; the lamp housing can crack.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn on the left and right turn signals and verify both rear bulbs flash at a normal speed.
- ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and verify both rear turn signals flash evenly.
- ✅ Check that the tail lamp sits flush and does not feel loose.
- ✅ If the fast flash continues, inspect the opposite rear bulb and front turn signal bulb on the same side.
